Managing Emotional Outbursts in 2-4 year olds

Toddlers and preschool aged children can be amazingly competent one minute, then explode with frustration or anger the next. Although they are able to express a wide range of emotions, they often lack the capacity to regulate their own behavior. At times they respond with levels of intensity that can be quite surprising and may leave their parents uncertain about how to calm them down! Common concerns that parents express are:

  • My two year old bites when he is upset
  • My three year old constantly yells at me when she doesn't get her way
  • My children won’t share
  • Why are my children the only ones who act out so much?

This workshop is designed to expand parents’ understanding of emotional development in young children. We will focus on everyday ‘triggers’ for emotional outbursts within families of 2-4 year olds. The overall aim will be directed toward building strategies for reducing interactive tension within the family and to begin to introduce skills for facilitating children’s self-regulation.
