School Consultations:
Focusing not only on students, but also on teachers.
A common theme for parents who seek our services revolves around
their children’s difficulties in school.
Whether
you are the parent of a young school-age child, a preteen, or
teenager, you know that the demands of schoolwork can often pose
challenges for children. The most common concern that parents
bring to us is that their child’s teacher has repeatedly
told them that their child lacks attention, motivation, or is
frankly disruptive in class. Many teachers go so far as to suggest
to the parents—gently or otherwise—that they should
seek out their pediatrician to consider whether or not medication
is needed.
There are many reasons for a child’s
"problematic" behavior at school, and most don't require
drugs (such as Ritalin or Adderall) for resolution. For example,
• There are differences in the child's learning style and
the teacher's style of instruction.
• The child does not know how to manage his or her energy.
• The teacher is not aware of the child’s need for
different learning approaches.
• The interaction between the teacher and child has become
so dysfunctional that they cannot make it work.
At
Family Rhythms, we initially address issues of school behavior
during family coaching sessions. When the development of an action
plan requires more first-hand information about how the child
engages in the classroom, a school consultation is useful.
This approach involves a visit
to the child’s classroom by a Family Rhythms staff member
for the purpose of observation and the development of an action
plan for the parents and teacher(s).
The price of this service is
$200.00 per hour.
