Frequently Asked
Questions
Q:
What is Family Rhythms?
A: Family Rhythms is a business
designed to help people — moms, dads, and children —
experience the satisfaction that family life can bring. We achieve
this through a variety of methods, including family coaching,
parenting courses, workshops, and teleconferences. At Family
Rhythms, our goal is to help parents and children learn the
skills necessary to engage in effective interactions at home
and in their broader lives. [top]
Q: What type of person would benefit from the
services offered at Family Rhythms?
A: Actually, Family Rhythms
is perfect for anyone who dreams of a more satisfying family
life but has no idea how to get there. For example, have you
ever asked yourself any of the following questions:
• Are you convinced
that you were the perfect parent before you had children?
• Do you ever wonder why we have to take a test to get
a driver’s license, but we can have children without any
formal training?
• Do you spend time looking for answers that will make
your family life easier?
• Do you go to bed at night and wonder why it seems so
difficult to be a parent?
If you answered “yes”
to any of these questions, Family Rhythms has a solution for
you. We can help you design a different life with your family…one
that is more satisfying and closer to your dream. [top]
Q: Is coaching the same thing as mental health
therapy or counseling?
A: No. While we come from
a medical and developmental psychology background and certainly
make use of that knowledge, our approach at Family Rhythms isn't
based on the medical model (that is, the deficit model of human
functioning). We focus on the strengths and possibilities in
family functioning. Our goal is to help families develop strategies
to raise the bar on the quality of family life. [top]
Q: How fast does something like family coaching
work?
A: Let's face it — many
people believe they can find answers to difficult parenting
questions in the help-section of the local bookstore or by watching
punch-line therapy on TV. But a happy family doesn't happen
over night. It requires work — physical, mental, and emotional.
At Family Rhythms, we help you with this "heavy lifting."
It will take time, but it's time well spent. [top]
Q: Do Lee and Michael McKenzie work with parents
only or with children, too?
A: We work with both parents
and children, as each situation dictates. Some services are
designed more for parents only (for example, many of our workshops,
fireside chats, and teleconferences), but we do have some workshops
for adolescents and are working on developing many more offerings
for children. Our coaching services often involve the whole
family. [top]
Q: What age is the youngest child you have ever
worked with in coaching?
A: We have had individual
sessions with children as young as six years of age. Young children
are often more receptive to new ideas than their parents, so
they are open to our work. When we work with parents and children
together, the real successes begin. [top]
Q: My child is having difficulty in school,
and the teachers want us to go to the pediatrician to treat
him for ADD. We aren't sure he has ADD and even if he does,
we don’t want to use medication. Can you help us?
A: This is one of the most
common concerns that parents bring to us. We have been working
with children with different learning styles and temperaments
throughout our careers. Not all children who are having difficulty
in school have ADD—there are many other situations that
can produce a lack of focus and attention in the classroom.
Through coaching and, at times, a school observation session,
we can uncover the root cause of the problem and suggest interventions
to remedy the situation. [top]
Q: How much do the services offered by Family
Rhythms cost?
A: Rates vary depending on
what programs you opt for. We offer a range of services to accommodate
every budget. Please visit our Programs & Services page
for more details or feel free to contact us if you have specific
questions. [top]
Q: Does health insurance cover the costs?
A: No. Because it's not related
to medical care, it's not covered by insurance. However, some
employers offer comprehensive flexible spending programs that
cover parenting and family life services. Your Human Resources
Department representative should be able to tell you if our
services would be covered under your employment benefits. [top]
Q: "Family coaching" and parenting
courses? Why would I want to consider that?
A: Consider some "important"
professions. Doctors go to medical school. Police officers train
at the police academy. Yet where do people train for the most
important job in the world — being a parent? There's no
"parent academy," but there probably should be. At
Family Rhythms, we fill this gap. We help parents be the best
that they can be. And we work with children to help them thrive
and feel comfortable in an often overwhelming world. Our staff
has over 50 years of combined experience working with moms,
dads, and children. [top]
Q: Do you have references?
A: Yes! We invite you to read
our family coaching and parenting workshop testimonials and
our biographies so that you have a better understanding of who
we are and how we have helped other parents like you. [top]
